Mr. Jobe has few markers that he uses for his math class. Then he retrieves 2 pens form the floor but he loses 40% of his markers because they are dried out. Now he has 10 left. How many markers did he had first?
The story matches the equation well, but we don't understand how the negative two fits into the equation. Perhaps you could include a few more details explaining what happened to the two markers. The story is creative but we feel that it could be more interesting. However the word problem gets right to the point without including any extra details that can make the reader confused about what to write for the equation.
I don't think the story fits the equation. First of all, the equation says -2 at the end but you don't mention it in your story problem. I read the story and wrote the equation as (x+2) - 4/10 = 10. I think it you should figure out a way to incorporate the -2 into your problem so it matches the equation. I think the word "lose" makes people write a minus sign so you should figure out another way to say 3/5. It should also be "Mr. Jobe has a few markers" not "Mr. Jobe has few markers", "from" not "form", and "did he have first" not "did he had first". Maybe the story can be more creative if you said he lost his markers because he accidentally dropped them in a volcano or something like that.
This word problem was quite confusing that I got a totally different equation, especially the part you said 40%; and when I wrote down my equation, -2 was missing. The final equation should be ⅗(x+2) = 10, but you never mention “2 markers missing”, or -2, in any part of your word problem. Also, I believe the overall word problem could be more creative by adding more detail. The part that I liked is when you turned “⅗ left” to “40% lost”, which is very creative in my opinion.
Mr. Jobe has x number of markers that he uses for his algebra class. Then he retrieves 2 markers from the floor but he throws out 40% from his total number of markers because they are dried out. Later, he gives out 2 markers to Ms Page because she ran out of markers. Now he has 10 left. How many markers did he have first?
