Why are we graphing equations???

Answer these three questions about Chapter 8.

1) In your opinion, what is the point of graphing equations? What does it help us understand?

2) Do you feel like you understood all of the concepts prior to this test? Which was the most difficult concept for you to understand?

3) Make one goal for the 4th quarter, but do not make it about grades. For example, if you want your grade to be higher, what can you do to make that happen?

This blog will be graded based on the completeness and thoughtfulness of your responses.

  1. 1) Graphing equations is another important skill out of the many out there that we need to possess, especially if some of us are going to major as business men, business women, be in economics or politics. But other than that it helps us to bring back our counting skills, test our neatness, and help us to learn some new methods that can be used in more than one way. It helps us to understand and know a broader range in the world of mathematics~. I learned even better how to plug in numbers and equation to help my math life easier. With the methods I learned from this chapter I can now find the answer much faster with less steps, and we always love less work.
    2) Yes. I also studied for this test, so hopefully I'll do well! The standard form really got to me though. I totally forgot how to do it! I talked to a friend afterwards about it, and she told me I might get partial credit, but who knows? I felt that I should review more on that, and as soon as I finish writing this I'm going to review some more to make sure I fully got the concept. Other than that it was all pretty good!! I'm fairly confident that I got a decent score on this.(:
    3) For the 4th quarter, I want to make sure I'm more responsible. Nowadays for some reason I feel like I'm slacking a bit, but I want to change that and get right back on track. I don't like slacking, I feel that it's not me. So it would definitely include paying attention 100% in class, not sleeping too late the night before, no procrastination (that's going to be a challenge) and keep reminding myself that I always have room for improvement.

  2. 1) The point of graphing equations is to get a visual look at what kind of line certain equations form. Actually looking at the graphed equation gives you more insight than looking at a bunch of numbers and variables written in standard or slope-intercept form. Graphing equations helps us understand the different kinds of slopes better (i.e. positive slope, negative slope, zero slope, undefined slope). Graphing equations also helps us prevent writing coordinates pairs wrong (like writing the y-coordinate before the x-coordinates) since we are doing it a lot. It also familiarizes us with the different axes (plural of axis) and parts of a coordinate plane (like the quadrants).
    2) I feel like I understood all of the concepts prior to this test. I’m glad that during the classes prior to the test, we spent a lot of time going over what we learned because it helped a lot when grasping the different concepts. One concept that was difficult to understand was when we had to switch back and forth from slope-intercept form to standard form. It can get confusing sometimes, especially when there are variables other than x and y involved. For the easier questions, it ok but for really tricky questions (like that bonus question - #38 - on pg. 373 that we had for homework), I didn’t know where to start. Luckily, the standard form questions on the test weren’t too bad.
    3) One goal for the 4th quarter is to prepare and review a little bit more for tests and quizzes. I want this as my goal because I think the amount of time I’ve been reviewing for tests/quizzes has been decreasing and I been getting kinda distracted. I can accomplish this goal by NOT procrastinating and studying at the last minute. If the test if after the weekend, I can do a little bit of reviewing each day. There is also this application called SelfControl which blocks websites (like tumblr, 9gag, facebook etc.) for a certain amount of time. If I use this app, I won’t be tempted from using tumblr and 9gag when I should be working.

  3. I think we’re graphing equations because it is an easy method to solve problems that has something to do with speed (like the relationship between time and distance) or other cases in life where there is a specific pattern between two numbers. Graphing helps us understand the relationship between two variables. It is much easier to understand that the two variables increase together when it is shown on a graph, not on an input-output table. By following the line the equation graphs, it is easy to see what happens when one number increases/decreases.

Yes, I feel like I understood all of the concepts related to the test. There were a lot of worksheets given and textbook questions from the review class that helped me study and prepare for the test. The most difficult concept for me was all the new vocabulary I learnt. Words like linear, function, parabola are words that don’t usually appear in places other than math textbooks, so when we first began the chapter, I had a hard time memorizing all the new words. Eventually I got the hang of it, but I’m still sort of shaky on the exact definitions on some words.

A goal for the 4th quarter is to be more prepared for class. There has been quite a lot of days when I left my math textbook, homework, and notebook at home, which caused a lot of trouble for everyone. I want to make sure I bring all the materials needed for class, including graph paper and a pencil, so I can complete all the work in class without any problems.

  4. 1) In your opinion, what is the point of graphing equations? What does it help us understand?

The point of graphing equations is so that you can actually see what the equation looks like when it is graphed. Just solving for a slope without graphing it may not make so much sense to some learners. Visual learners, for example, may have a much easier time looking at the graph and figuring out the slope, rather than looking at the equation to figure out the slope. It helps us understand some of the more confusing concepts such as negative slopes, positive slopes, zero slopes, and undefined slopes. Mr. Jobe showed us the picture of a penguin skiing down from the upper left hand corner to the lower right hand corner and told us that such slopes were negative. I was able to pick up that concept very quickly, due to the picture.

    2) Do you feel like you understood all of the concepts prior to this test? Which was the most difficult concept for you to understand?

I feel like I understood most of the concepts prior to this test. The review game that we played in class especially helped me understand concepts I did not get. The most difficult concept was writing the standard form of equations that go through a pair of coordinates, and are perpendicular to a certain slope.

    3) Make one goal for the 4th quarter, but do not make it about grades. For example, if you want your grade to be higher, what can you do to make that happen?

A goal I would like to achieve for the fourth quarter is to be more focused while doing homework. I would like to accomplish this goal, because I seem to make careless mistakes while I am off track. As Mr.Jobe comes around to check my homework, I often spot flaws in my answer and math. I could manage to fix this problem by turning off ichat and Facebook while I do my homework.

  5. In my opinion, I think the point of graphing equations is to find the relationship between the coordinates and the numbers. Also, it can use in real life and can get better understanding of functions and other equations such like slope-intercept form. We can change the intercept form into the standard form.
I feel like I did understood part of the concepts prior to this test. When I was practicing the problems in the textbook, it solved out pretty well but when I took the test, I was confused with the most parts of the questions. I need to look over this chapter and make sure I understand it very well.
One goal for the 4th quarter, I would want to make sure that I understand every chapter that our class go through. I also want to encourage myself to practice more solving the problems and try to work hard. By the end of the 4th quarter, I want to improve on this parts.

  6. I think the point of graphing equations are to understand slopes and y or x intercepts. It help us about how we find coordinates and make look more easier to understand the concepts of equations.
I feel I understood all most all of the concepts prior to this test. The most difficult concepts was talking about the differences and explain. I was confusing about the vertical and horizontal equations.
One goal for the 4th quarter will be more understand bout confusing concepts and know all the things we learn. I can solve more problems or ask difficulties to Mr. Jobe for help.

  7. 1) I think graphing equations is useful at solving any problems related to functions. For example, if you are given many equations and have to figure out the intersecting point(S), you’ll have a hard time if you try to solve it with calculating. However, if you use graphing, you just have to count the intersecting points and figure out their coordinates. Also, it helps us to understand the relationship between equations, such as equations with the same slope parallels to each other.

    2) I don’t think I learned every single thing about graphing. I still haven’t learned specifically about parabolas, and will have to wait until I learn it. However, I am sure that I learned every needed concepts about graphing linear equations. The most difficult concept was figuring out the equation using only the sets of coordinates, especially if one set has an unknown variable on either x or y. To solve this, I have to deal with tons of equations and combine the results to get a right answer, except that it has a high rish of getting wrong.

    3) This might seem to be a little bit unrelevant, but during the 4th quarter, I want to push myself to be more volunteering in class either it’s orally presenting or answering questions in class. Through all these years of schooling, the history of my volunteer is as short as mother goose. Therefore, starting from the 4th quarter and possible upto upcoming years, I want to increase my volunteer during class.

  8. 1) I think the point of graphing equations is to see what a equation really looks like in an easiest method, which gives a better understanding of slopes than the equation with numbers only and clearly shows whether the slope is positive, negative, zero or undefined. Also, you can learn more about graphing skills and other things like functions. In real life, you can use graphing in organizing the data in things such as business and speed of a movement, which makes the data look organized and easy to look and find information about it.

    2) I think I understood most of the concepts prior to this test, except for some parts such as looking for an equations that goes through a pair of coordinates and has same y intercept. Parabolas and graphing or finding an equation with unknown slope or x and y intercepts were the most difficult concept for you to understand because we didn’t learn a lot about parabolas and the calculation of the equation by the table was hard because we had to calculate everything and it got trickier as the number got bigger, which was so confusing. Also, for graphing or finding an equation with unknown slope or x and y intercepts were difficult because the ways of solving were all different from each other and some of the problems had least information possible, which made it more harder and complicated to solve.

    3) My one goal for the 4th quarter is to be more focused in class while solving problems. I tend to get distracted a lot and sometimes, I was not able to finish classwork on time. So, for the 4th quarter, I want to focus more on solving the problem so I could concentrate more on tests and quizzes and make sure I understand all the concepts of that chapter.

  9. 1)I think the point of graphing is to help us with the upcoming problems that requires points(coordinates), and sometimes using coordinates to solve problems is easier than solving it algebraically. There’s some formulas and equation that requires graphing. It helps us to understand more complicated things like horizontal/vertical line and the slopes like slope of 0 and undefined slope.
2)I think I understood all of the concepts prior to this test and the most difficult concept for me to understand was using the input output table for f(x) and x. At the start, I wasn’t sure what it was about, but I practiced and understood it eventually.
3)My goal for the 4th quarter is to adapt and understand everything that we learn in class and solve harder problem which requires all of the things that we learnt in class.

I think the point of graphing equations are to help us understand the relationship between the numbers.

Do you feel like you understood all of the concepts prior to this test? Which was the most difficult concept for you to understand?

I feel like I understood most of the concepts prior to this test. The most difficult concept for me to understand were the terms for the graphs.

    3) Make one goal for the 4th quarter, but do not make it about grades. For example, if you want your grade to be higher, what can you do to make that happen?

When I take tests, I seem to make silly mistakes such as 1 + 1 = 1 or such. In the future, I’d like to learn how to solve questions faster so I have enough time to go over my answers.

  11. 1) In your opinion, what is the point of graphing equations? What does it help us understand?
I believe the point of graphing equation is to allow us to see the equations come to life. When we graph, we're able to visualize what the actual equations look like, and use it in solving several different problems as well. These problems can include anything from speed/distance problems to finding intersections between two or more graphs.
    2) Do you feel like you understood all of the concepts prior to this test? Which was the most difficult concept for you to understand?
I feel like I do understand all of the concepts we learned in class prior to the test. The most difficult concept for me to grasp was graphing using the rise and run of the slope. I'd never tried it before as I always used the input-output table to graph. I was confused for a while and mixed up the rise and run a few times, but I believe I understand it now.
    3) Make one goal for the 4th quarter, but do not make it about grades. For example, if you want your grade to be higher, what can you do to make that happen?
My goal for the fourth quarter is to take more time and consideration when doing homework. I feel like homework is the perfect way to both review class material and independently learn things we haven't completely gone over in class yet. A lot of the test questions do tend to come from the homework, in my opinion. Thus, by spending more time each night on the homework, I could have a more comprehensive understanding of each topic.
